Only One GOD

There is One GOD – only One.

Deuteronomy 6:4-5: Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.  Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. NIV Isaiah 4:6:  “This is what the Lord says —Israel’s King and Redeemer, the Lord Almighty: I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God. NIV

In this culture, polytheism – numerous false gods – abounded. Also, there were a lot of idols made and worshiped too. Early on, Israel even made a “golden cow” to worship. As for me, I only worship (WORTHship) and praise the true GOD. We are all made in the image of GOD but Adam and Eve lost FELLOWship with Him when they ate of the forbidden fruit. As their ancestors, we lost FELLOWship too! Although GOD is Holy and can NOT be a part of sin, He had a plan to restore Fellowship with those who desired it and the Bible details His plan. GOD’s chosen witnesses to humanity were the Israelites, but they found themselves in slavery in Egypt. Enter Moses, GOD’s chosen servant to deliver them from bondage.

GOD has many names informing us of His characteristics/attributes. One of them is Jehovah (I am Who I am); He is the relational GOD and spoke face to face with Moses.

Ex 3:14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. NIV

GOD Himself told Moses of a few of His characteristics:

Ex 33:19 … I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. NIV
Ex 34:6-7: And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. NIV

We will have more to say about GOD’s names and characteristics in future blogs.
